Specsavers Mullingar caring for eyes and ears for 12 years

The team at Specsavers Mullingar has been serving the local community with top-class eyecare for 12 years. Having opened the store in 2006, it has become an integral part of Mullingar’s business community and has grown substantially in size and standing. Bringing with them a combined experience of over 70 years, store directors Elaine McGovern, Kerril Hickey and David McCloskey have led the team in Mullingar since it first opened.

Together with their team of experienced optometrists, audiologists and highly trained customer service staff, they have strived to provide the best level of service and expertise in hearing and optical care for the people of Mullingar for over 12 years. With the importance of regular eye and ear checks, understanding that it is more than just a sight or hearing test, the team continues to place an unrivalled focus on continued professional development and technological advancement.

Specsavers Mullingar offers an unparalleled optical and hearing service that cater for all sectors of the market; from kids to the fashion-conscious male and female glasses wearer, those seeking glasses for work or other lifestyle purposes, as well as contact lens and hearing aid wearers, to ensure customers receive the best possible care and advice for all their optical and hearing needs. Store director at Specsavers Mullingar, Elaine McGovern says, ‘At Specsavers, we are committed to developing our staff and improving our store so that customers have access to the latest technology as well as in-store expertise from knowledgeable optometrists and audiologists.

We would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to all of our customers for their support over the last 12 years and look forward to welcoming both new and existing customers to our store in 2018 and beyond.’ From routine eye examinations to complex contact lens fittings, Specsavers Mullingar can provide all aspects of professional eye care.

The store now boasts two optical testing rooms, an on-site laboratory and a soundproof hearing booth. There has been significant investment in the latest optical technology, including a Fundus Camera, which can detect a variety of health problems such as diabetes glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration and most recently, Digital Precision Eyecare. This cutting-edge way of selecting and fitting customers’ glasses uses imaging software on tablet devices.

Since opening in 2006, the Specsavers Mullingar team has increased from a team of six to 23, which now comprises three optometrists, two dispensing opticians and two audiologists. Committed to providing the highest quality of optical care, the team at Specsavers Mullingar is encouraging the local community to stay on top of their eye health by incorporating regular eye tests into their overall healthcare routine.

As well as determining whether you require glasses, tests can also detect a variety of conditions including glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure and, in rare cases, even life-threatening conditions such as brain tumours. Early diagnosis is vital and with glaucoma being one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in Ireland, Specsavers Mullingar is calling out for the local community to get their eyes tested at least every two years.

Elaine continues, ‘Specsavers Mullingar is committed to raising awareness of the benefits of regular eye examinations, at least every two years, as they are crucial for detecting early signs of the condition, glaucoma. Left undetected, glaucoma can cause blindness, however, it is readily treatable and the condition can be controlled if diagnosed early. ‘As we get older we are at an increased risk of developing glaucoma, which can be hereditary.

At Specsavers Mullingar, we want to remind people that they should have an eye examination at least every two years, which is particularly important if they are over 40 years of age or have a family history of glaucoma.’ Under the new PRSI treatment benefit, thousands of people in Ireland now qualify for a free eye test and a pair of glasses. Following changes to the PRSI scheme by the Department of Social Protection late last year, anyone who has been employed or self-employed in Ireland for two years, is now entitled to a free eye test as well as a free pair of glasses or contribution to a pair of frames, at Specsavers Mullingar.

Under the new scheme, those eligible for the benefit will receive a voucher towards the cost of new glasses to the value of €42.37. Customers can also put their PRSI benefit towards the cost of designer frames at Specsavers Mullingar - including Kylie Minogue Eyewear, Balmain, Karen Millen, Gant, Converse and many more.

The team at Specsavers Mullingar is a keen supporter of local charities and clubs and is a committed supporter of the Mullingar Golf Club, the local tennis club as well as Shamrock Ladies GAA team.
