From The Lonesome West to Frankfurt!

The Martin McDonagh play The Lonesome West performed by Mullingar Theatre Lab won countless accolades on the three-act Amateur Drama Council of Ireland circuit.

Now the group have staged their first international performance in Germany.

Kulturhaus Frankfurt hosted Mullingar Theatre Lab’s powerful saga directed by Danny Hyland and featuring the persistently arguing brothers Coleman and Valene at the start of this month (Friday July 5 to Sunday July 7).

In a first for a Mullingar group, Alan Conroy, who plays Coleman, says of the production: “We were tremendously proud to represent Mullingar all around Ireland and tremendously proud to do so in Frankfurt”.

“I believe it’s the first time a Mullingar group has staged a production internationally.

“It a tremendous honour to be invited to Frankfurt. It came about as a direct result of us being involved in the ADCI competition.

“It was a record for any group for their first time participating in the All Ireland Amateur Drama Circuit to make it all the way to an All Ireland final, so we are very proud of our achievement,” says Alan.

Mullingar Theatre Lab toured Lonesome West at eight different drama festivals in Ireland, winning at five, coming second place in two, and placing third in another, guaranteeing them a place in the final.

The group also notched up several ‘best actor’, ‘best director’ and ‘best set’ awards.
