Mullingar businessman Paul O'Reilly has become the new president of the Midland Gateway Chamber of Commerce.

At the Chamber's agm last week, Mr. O'Reilly became fourth president of the organisation.

The presidency rotates each year between the towns of Athlone, Tullamore and Mullingar.

Paul, cofounder of the engineering firm ORS in 1991, was president of Mullingar Chamber from 2000 - 2002 and according to the Midlands Gateway Chamber has both the experience and expertise to drive forward the goals and objectives of the Midlands Gateway.

The out-going President of the Midlands Gateway Chamber, Dominic Doheny, was commended by Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin for his commitment and dedication to the organisation over the past 12 months, while Mr. Doheny stated that he believed Paul O'Reilly will make a great president of the Gateway Chamber, and that he will serve the people of the midlands well.

Mr. O'Reilly told the agm his aim was that in the coming year the Midlands Gateway Chamber will continue to work on the projects such as the new brand, which is being developed by the Implementation Forum and the Midlands Gateway Chamber under the direction of Jackie Gorman; the continued development of the business leaders' forum which is being directed by Seamus Sheerin; the Energy Competition, and researching the development of a cycle route between the three towns of Athlone, Tullamore and Mullingar.

"I believe that there is a huge future for the development of alternative energy and for us, the energy competition is a stepping stone to promoting the Midlands region as a centre of excellence for alternative energy," Mr. O'Reilly said.

"There are a number of other projects in the pipeline in this context which we look forward to developing."
