Community Garda Sgt Tony Quinn ready for National Bike Week.

Mullingar gardaí are playing their part in the promotion of National Bike Week.

At the launch in Mullingar Garda Station, Community Garda Sgt Tony Quinn said garda officers will be available over the coming days to advise bike owners on safety and security issues affecting and their trusty bikes.

In terms of security, gardaí strongly advice owners to take a good, clear photograph of their bike immediately after purchase, to log the make, model and frame number of the bike and any distinguishing extras which they may have.

All bikes should be security marked, visible to the human eye, in at least two places and expert help may be required for certain types of bike.

For more expensive bikes, owners should look at the aspect of insurance and even having an electric tracking device built into the frame.

Bikes should be stored in a secure location when not in use, preferably not visble to the public and if left outside, properly secured to an immovable object, something which should be repeated when leaving the bike in public places.

Garda officers will be available to give advice on the best types of lock to use.

National Bike Week runs until Sunday June 24.
