Pat Falvey and Pemba Gyalje

Adventurer coming to Mullingar

One of Ireland's most well-known adventurers will be telling the tragic story behind the award-winning movie "The Summit" in Mullingar in the coming week.
Pat Falvey has more than 65 expeditions up and down the Seven Summits under his belt - including Everest which he climbed twice. Sherpa Pemba Gyalje has been hailed as a hero internationally. He saved multiple lives on the tragic expedition in 2008 on an expedition now known as the worst K2 climbing disaster in history after 11 people died.  The movie The Summit sets the record straight on the tragic expedition and is in cinemas now. At the heart of the story is Irish climber Ger McDonnell, whose circumstances were shrouded in mystery, something Falvey says he wanted to address in both the movie, and with a book which he has co-written with Pemba Gyalje, who was on the expedition.
Entitled "The Summit: How Triumph Turned to Tragedy on K2′s Deadliest Days" the book tells the tale of how Ger McDonnell was faced with a heart-wrenching predicament when he came across three climbers tangled up in ropes hanging from the mountain.
Pat and Pemba will be in Outdoor Sports in Mullingar on Friday December 6 at 7.30pm to deliver a presentation on the fascinating tragedy and sign copies of their book. The event is being organised by Ballymahon businessman and climbing fanatic Des Mulvihill.
Admission is free and all are welcome. Both speakers will be open to questions afterwards
