End of an era: Mullingar Town Band director Hubert Magee steps down after 58 years

After nearly six decades at the helm of the Midlands' top marching band, Mullingar Town Band director Hubert 'Hubie' Magee has announced his decision to retire.

The announcement was confirmed on the band's Facebook page this morning.

Mr Magee's daughter, Kim, has been appointed as new Band Director.

"Upon being advised of his decision," the band committee said, "the Committee of Mullingar Town Band, on behalf of all the membership, has acknowledged Hubie's exceptional distinguished service to Mullingar Town Band by bestowing upon him the lifetime honour of Band Director Emeritus."

As well as bringing music into the lives of thousands of young people over those 58 years, Hubie led Mullingar Town Band in parades and competitions across the country and indeed abroad, where the outfit garnered much distinction.

Kim Magee takes up the baton as the first female Band Director, and brings a vast amount of experience to the post.
