Better weather ahead for Mullingar's bank holiday

After two days of solid rain, there are better things ahead for the bank holiday, Met Éireann's forecast reveals, with weather to improve further as the week progresses.

The prediction for today is that this morning will see further spells of rain, although this has become mainly light.  Sunny spells and scattered showers over Munster will gradually extend to other parts during the afternoon, though it will probably stay cloudy and damp over Ulster and north Leinster until dark.

Highest temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, highest in the south of the country. Moderate to fresh west to northwest winds will ease later in the day.

Tonight

The last of the rain will clear the north early tonight with clear spells following. It will turn cool and some mist or fog may form. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees in little or no wind.

Tomorrow

A lot of dry weather is expected for Bank Holiday Monday with spells of sunshine, though there will be a few isolated showers and later in the day some rain will develop in the southwest. Highest temperatures of 18 to 21 degrees. Light variable winds will become moderate southerly during the afternoon.

Outlook

On Monday night, outbreaks of rain and drizzle will spread across the country and it will stay mild.

The rain is likely to clear the northeast early Tuesday. Sunny spells will follow, but showers will develop later in the day. It will be quite warm and humid with highest temperatures in the range of 18 to 22 degrees in light winds.

Wednesday might start dry and bright, but cloudier conditions, with showers or longer spells of rain, will spread eastwards through the day. Winds will remain light on Wednesday and similar high temperatures will be reached.

Thursday may turn out to be the driest day of the week with sunny periods and just the risk of a few showers.

The chance of more widespread showers increases on Friday, though some sunshine is likely as well. Temperatures will generally be in the high teens and westerly winds may pick up a bit.

Friday saw over 23mm of rainfall recorded at the Met Éireann station in Mullingar.
