Emergency services from both Westmeath and Meath rushed to the scene and worked frantically to extricate the body of the deceased from his vehicle.

Firefighters from Castlepollard and Kells used specialised cutting equipment and removed the 46 year old driver from the wreckage but, tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the lorry, a man in his 60s was taken to Navan Hospital with what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí are still at the scene and the road is closed for a forensic investigation and motorists are being advised that diversions are in place.

An appeal for any witnesses to the crash to come forward has been issued by the gardaí.
