Pauline McCabe has been elected to the role of Area Governor for Toastmasters.

Pauline stretches her comfort zone with toastmasters role

Mullingar’s loss is the area’s gain. A member for almost 14 years, Pauline McCabe has been elected to the role of Area Governor for Toastmasters.

She will have responsibility for five Toastmaster clubs, ensuring the elected officers have adequate training to enable each club to reach its full potential.

Little did she think that one day she would find herself in such an important leadership role. Was it a surprise?

“Not really,” said Pauline. “It’s been a long time developing. I have been asked to put myself forward before but now is the right time for me. I have the experience and a good knowledge of Toastmasters.”

It is a big commitment. Pauline will need to do a lot of listening and show good leadership in suggesting changes to benefit clubs. Why on earth would she want to take it on?

“I need to stretch my comfort zone. I am still a shy person. I feel I need to expand my leadership skills.”
Pauline obviously feels passionately about Toastmasters. What does she think the ‘Better Speaking Better Listening Club’ in Mullingar would have to offer anyone, for example?

“Toastmasters can be so much more than improving your communication skills. You can become a better listener, leader or organiser.

"It can open a whole new world, friendships or romance. Members can discover talents they never dreamed existed, whether it’s delivering a humorous story or inspiring some sort of beneficial action. It is a place where you can find your voice and – even better – have the confidence to use it.”

So, is Pauline going to counter the false perception of Toastmasters as a ‘stuffy’ organisation?

“Yes. If people won’t come to Toastmasters, then Toastmasters will come to the people. Last year, Mullingar Toastmasters showed their fun side by taking part in St Patrick’s Day parade and Culture Night.

"Everyone can see we are ordinary people. We don’t dress in red robes and drink wine as we toast one another.”

Pauline McCabe is certainly a ‘normal member’ with many extraordinary talents, not least of which is taking on this serious and important challenge.

Her colleagues at Mullingar Toastmasters wish her the best of luck.
