Gary Quinn of Stephen’s Fish Market in Mullingar did the town proud as a finalist in the Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) Young Fishmonger 2015 competition in the Radisson Blu St Helen’s Hotel, Stillorgan, yesterday (Monday) – but unfortunately he didn’t win.

Gerard Collier of Fisherman’s Catch, Clogherhead, County Louth took that title, but the judges said all five finalists demonstrated an exceptional standard in technical expertise, product knowledge and customer service.

Speaking following the awards, Gary told the Westmeath Examiner that while he may have missed out on the gold this year, he will be aiming to take first place in next year’s competition.

“Unfortunately I didn’t win today, but Gerard Collier who won certainly got his just desserts. It was a great experience overall. It started way back in May and I’ve learned so much over the last few months, I’m delighted to have been a part of it all,” said Gary.

“I couldn’t have done it with out the support of Mullingar and the support of the customers who come in to me every day, and for that I am very thankful.

“I was delighted to get to the final. In my heart and soul I wasn’t really expecting to win. I knew after the skills test that I wasn’t the most talented on the day, but I’m hoping to up my game for next year and return to the competition,” said the resilient fishmonger.

Martin Shanahan, owner of Fishy Fishy Café and Restaurant, author and TV broadcaster, was guest speaker at the event, where he congratulated the finalists and commended their passion for the seafood business.

As overall winner of the competition, Gerard will be offered a study trip to France, a cheque for €1,000 and along with the other finalists he will benefit from a free placement on BIM’s retail development workshops, a set of professional knives and a specially designed trophy. As part of their prize, all of the finalists have already enjoyed an inspiring masterclass in seafood cookery with Martin Shanahan.
