Think you can get away with pionts north or south of the border well think again

Motorists on both sides of the border who up to now could disregard road safety penalties pertaining in the jurisdictions of Northern Ireland and the Republic will not in future be able to do so.

This was stated by Independent MEP Marian Harkin when she welcomed the proposed EU directive which will facilitate cross border exchange of information on road safety offences.

The eight offences include, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not using a seat belt and failing to stop at a red light.

“The objective of the proposal is to allow for an exchange of vehicle registration information between Member States to identify drivers who commit a road traffic offence in a Member State other than the one where their vehicle is registered”, she said.

“The directive replaces a previous directive which essentially would have had the same effect but a dispute arose over its legal base. All of the different issues have now been sorted out and we can expect this new legislation to enter into force in the near future”, Marian Harkin MEP concluded.
