Ruth clinches gold in special olympics bowling singles

Ruth Geerah has become the second Westmeath-born competitor to win a gold medal at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, coming up trumps in the bowling singles event earlier today (Friday).

Ruth (35) follows Ballymore athlete, Peter Malynn, who captured a gold medal in the bocce singles competition on Tuesday.

A member of the Galaxy Special Olympics Club, Mullingar, Ruth has competed in badminton and 5-a-side soccer, as well as bowling, during her eight years with the club.

Ruth's success, and that of other Irish athletes, took the Irish medal count up to a phenomenal 33 by the end of Day 5.

Meanwhile, Hill of Down native Liam Foley (17) – well known in Westmeath as a member of the Shoot 'n' Stars Special Olympics Club – took a bronze medal in the badminton singles.

Commenting on Team Ireland's phenomenal success so far, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said today: "I want to congratulate all of the athletes on what was another very exciting day for Team Ireland at venues across Los Angeles. Winning a medal for your country is a tremendous achievement.

"I know family, friends and supporters and indeed the general public back home are very much behind the team and cheering their every success. I would also like to thank Taoiseach Enda Kenny for his very kind message of support.”

The Games – which run until August 2 – are co-chaired by US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle.
