Mr blobbys marathon for cancer society

Fitness trainer Mark McGovern from Slanemore, Mullingar, will be attempting this year’s Dublin Marathon.

It’s a tough ask at the best of times but when you’re planning to run a marathon in a fully enclosed inflatable Mr Blobby costume, it brings a whole new dimension to the challenge!

Mr Blobby’s marathon bid is all in a good cause and Mark is giving any funds he raises to the Irish Cancer Society.

Having completed two marathons last year in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Mark is hoping to improve on his time of 4:45 and raise €5,000 for the cancer society in the process.

“The main reason I’m running the race in a Mr Blobby suit is to draw more attention to the cause.

“It’s brings the fun factor to it,” he told the Westmeath Examiner.

“A friend’s daughter was diagnosed with leukaemia a number of years back and thankfully she has now been given the all clear. So this is a way of saying thank you to the Irish Cancer Society so that they can continue to help others,” Mark added.

He is so intent on raising awareness he created a short film of himself in the Mr Blobby suit undergoing the trials and tribulations of training for the marathon.

“The film received a huge amount of views so far and I really hope it continues. The marathons last year were tough but I flew through them. I really didn’t have any problems but this year I want to improve on my time and that’s going to be hard to do in a Mr Blobby suit,” he laughs, “But I’m working on it.”
