Soldiers help with flood relief works

Members of 2 Artillery Regiment based in Costume Barracks, Athlone as they ‘stand to’ in assistance to the civil authority in Athlone.

Deployed since December 4, the gunners of all ranks have been assisting families and the community in protecting their homes and businesses.

This work is expected top last another three weeks at least, and the Defence Forces, including units like 2 Artillery Regiment will continue to ‘stand to’ in support of communities throughout Ireland.

River Shannon in Athlone

Tuesday January 5, noon

The River Shannon remains at a high level through Athlone and its hinterland but is expected to stabilise and begin to recede over the coming days.

The Flood Response Interagency Coordination Group met again this morning and all flood defences, pumping, accommodation and transport needs continue to be met.  

Power was returned to the Bastian Quay apartments yesterday evening and residents have returned to their apartments.

As of this morning there are 32 families in emergency accommodation.

The public are advised to exercise extreme caution in flooded areas and in the vicinity of the River Shannon.

A further update will issue after the next meeting of the Flood Response Coordination Group, which will take place on Friday January 8 at 11am.
