Over 20 Westmeath students receive AIT sports scholarships

Over a fifth of the students who have received sports scholarships from Athlone Institute of Technology for the 2015-2016 academic year are from Westmeath.

In total, 96 students from 19 counties and 15 different sports are on the list. Some 22 of them are from Westmeath.

All scholarship recipients for the 2015-2016 academic year will receive free use of the Institute’s sports facilities, physical therapy, functional screening assessments, cookery demonstrations, study skill support, nutritional advice and sports psychology.

The Institute has invested heavily in sports facilities in the past seven years with an overall spend in excess of €12 million during this period.

The most recent additions to facilities on campus are the new gym and high performance training centre which are amongst the finest sporting facilities in the country.

The AIT sports scholarship scheme was initiated in 1996 when six scholarships were offered. President of the Institute, Professor Ciaran O’Cathain, said “We at AIT are very proud of our sports scholarship scheme and our world class facilities complement this scheme. The synergy between facilities and supports allows young aspiring sports people to develop to the pinnacle of their potential while also gaining a third level qualification”.
