Climbing Croagh Patrick for charity on your 78th birthday

Next Friday, April 8, will be a big day for Streete man Bernie Bannon, as not only is he turning 78, he will also be climbing Croagh Patrick.

Bernie, along with his son-in-law Paddy Reilly, will be leaving early that Friday morning to be at the base of the mountain by noon.

The purpose of their walk is to raise money for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA), as Bernie has a friend who suffers from the disease.

“He’s a great fella and I thought it would be nice to do something that might, if not help him, then help someone else,” said Bernie.

It is not Bernie’s first time to climb the mountain: he last did it at 72, meaning that he is well aware of the challenges.

“It’s extremely dangerous on the way down,” he said. “I told my son-in-law to bring a shovel.”

Asked if he was going barefoot, he laughed and said: “Oh no, I won’t be doing that! It’s bad enough as it is. The rocks can be very sharp and can cut your feet.”

In terms of the support he has received, Bernie said: “I just started trying to get support, and the feedback so far has been good. Whatever we get we’ll be thankful for.”

The IMNDA help and inform people about the disease, via their website, imnda.ie, and their bi-annual magazine Connect. There is also a booklet called 'Your Personal Guide to MND’, which can be ordered from the IMNDA’s Services Department on 1800 403 403.

All the money raised from Bernie’s climb will be donated to the IMNDA at a ceremony at Feerick’s Hotel, Rathowen, on a date that is to be confirmed.
Sponsorship cards are available from outlets in Streete, or contact Pat Duffy on 086 8433355 for more details about how to support Bernie and the presentation night.
