Almost 4,000 UK nationals in Ireland sign petition seeking second referendum

 

Almost 4,000 of those who have signed the petition calling on the British government to hold a second Brexit referendum are based in this country.

Crunching the numbers in The Westmeath Examiner newsroom this evening just around 10.45pm, there were 3,513,974 signatures on the petition, and of these 3,379,382 (96 per cent were from UK residents).

Just 134,592 were from outside the UK - and 3,829 of those signatures were from Irish IP addresses.

The petition is supposed to be signed by British citizens only.

Besides the UK itself, the countries with the greatest number of signatories are France, which accounts for 23,298 of those who have signed; Spain  - 14,790; US – 13,771; Australia – 13,719; Germany – 9,121; Canada – 5,102; Gibraltar – 4946; New Zealand – 4,152; Netherlands – 3,912, then Ireland, which comes in tenth on the list.
