Weather hits major marching bands event planned for The Downs

Mullingar Town Band has been forced to call off its marching bands extravaganza, which was to take place tomorrow, August 21 at The Downs GAA pitch.

The day’s torrential downpours have left the pitch at The Downs waterlogged, with the result that after reviewing the situation, the band was left with no option but to cancel the event.

However, said band spokesman, Martin Nally, the band hopes to stage a replacement event next weekend, which will give locals the chance to see the fantastic performance prepared for the event by Mullingar Town Band.

Four of Ireland’s top bands were to take part in the event planned for tomorrow: Mullingar Town Band itself, together with Arklow's Inbhear Mór band, the Viking Drum Corps from Tallaght, and the Clondalkin Youth Band, founded by, as it turns out, a Mullingar man, Vincent Dolan, who came up through the ranks of Mullingar Town Band.

Since December, Mullingar Town Band has been planning for its competition performance, fired up after last year when it did so well on the marching bands competition circuit.
