Doran looks back to 'Wood' ten years on

Mullingar indie artist Peter Doran is holding a one-off performance to celebrate the tenth anniversary of his first album Wood.
The Stables on Friday September 16 is the place, where Peter and some of the original musicians on the album will join together on stage for a celebration concert of the record.
"I'm looking forward to bringing some of the songs back to life on stage for the first time in years," Peter begins. "This was my first time putting an album into the world. These were my songs and my friends playing on them. It was an exciting time and I had big dreams. I listen back now (these things last forever) and I’m proud of what we did." Those joining him on stage on the night are Ger Toal on cello, Barry Coyle on drums, Paul McGinty on electric guitar, and together they will be breathing new life into singles like Scenic Route, Rain, Starting Line and the album's title track.
"I released Wood in 2006, I was 22, and it started out in a small house in the country around 2004... I think about who I was then and what was important to me at the that time. I wonder how much my thinking on music and life has changed over the years. It’s not an enormous amount of time but it’s long enough," he reflects.
"After starting the Wood recordings at the lake house with only okay results, we ended up switching to a proper studio and starting from scratch. The studio was owned by my great friend and mentor, the late Vinny Baker," he recalls. "Vinny was an absolutely huge influence on me as I grew up and put me on to all sorts of great music. "Vinny gave an untold amount of time free of charge during the Wood sessions. He had just opened up his new studio and was happy to get time to know his equipment and the sound of the room. We were both learning at that point. On top of all that he even played guitar on a couple of tunes, including a blistering guitar solo on the single Loose.
"His son Gary, another of my closest friends provided the cover art for the album and did all the work for the booklet. The cover shot was taken in Badami in India. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it and Gary was kind enough to let me use it.
"Ten years have passed and I'm looking forward to dusting off some of the songs. Support on the night is from Kate O'Callaghan who opened up for Duke Special when he played The Fence here recently - so it should be a good night."
