Corkman Liam Keane last December going for a swim in what was dubbed "Ireland's largest pothole" - happily, in Cork, not Westmeath!

A whole lot of holes in Westmeath's roads

A long list of areas with potholes emerged at the most recent meeting of the Mullingar Municipal District as councillors called to have road surface repairs carried out.

Cllr Andrew Duncan asked that potholes at the junction of the Ballymore and Ballymahon Roads at Weldon's Cross be repaired.

He also drew the council's attention to potholes at Strattonstown, Ballinea, and was informed that all these have since been repaired.

Cllr Frank McDermott was told that potholes have been repaired on the road into the White Lake at Cl onageeragh, Fore.

Cllr Bill Collentine asked that repairs and resurfacing work be carried out to the road and footpaths at St Agnes Cottages, and was told the potholes will be patched as soon as possible.

His request that the footpath outside Daly's Filling Station on the Lynn Road be repaired led to an assurance that repairs would be carried out as soon as possible, and there was a similar response to his request for resurfacing works at the Burnell Road, off the Russellstown Road.

Cllr Emily Wallace asked that routine maintenance be carried out on Kiernan's Laneway, Monkstown, Coole, and was told the work has now been carried out.

However, in response to her request that the cul de sac at Derrymore Killucan have remedial works carried out, the council stated that a structural assessment of the road identified no necessary remedial works.

Cllr Johnny Penrose proposed that the council in its 2017 estimates allocate funds to carry out remedial works from McGowan's to Nangle's at Piercefield, Ballyacargy, Road L1811. The Council responded that it is included for works in 2017 under the three-year road restoration programme.
