Gardaí in Westmeath issue warning after €2,000 is stolen in email scam

Gardaí in Westmeath have issued a warning about an online scam after an email purporting to be from the communications company Eir led to a local person having €2,000 fraudulently taken from their bank account.

A report about the incident was made to gardaí last week.

The local person who was affected said they had received an email, pretending to be from Eir, which asked for bank card details to process payments correctly.

The person gave their details and €2,000 was taken out of their account on the same day.

The bank contacted the person and the email was confirmed to be bogus.

Gardaí in Athlone are asking the public to be cautious in giving out account information.

They stressed that no legitimate company will ask for bank account details by email or phone.

People can contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 64 98550, or any garda station, if they have concerns about an email, letter, or phone call they have received.
