Ann Marie Davitt from Mullingar is one of the 19,500 people taking part in the Dublin Marathon this Sunday, October 30, and she is raising funds for a new scanner at the hospital in Mullingar.

Having started running in 2014 with Hannah Buchanan, Ann Marie later joined Maurice Looby Fitness, "a great group of runners - I've made lots of friends and there is great support in the group".

Ann Marie decided to register for her first marathon this year, and chose DCM. "Fundraising for MRI scanner has motivated me in this decision," she said.

The target for the scanner is €900,000 and numerous events are taking place in the area to help reach that.

A radiographer at the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar, Ann Marie explained that MRI is very much a part of routine imaging - no longer a specialised investigation - that should be available in every general hospital.

An onsite MRI service is an essential diagnostic test required for all patients attending various services. Paediatric MRI scans come with a two-year waiting list as anesthesia support is required.

With this scanner in Mullingar this service can be developed and accessed, she said.

Contact Ann Marie via the radiology department at Mullingar hospital if you would like to contribute to her fundraising efforts.
