Book of condolence for victims of Manchester attack

Statement from Cllr Michael O’Brien:

“I can confirm that a book of condolence for the victims of the Manchester terror attack will open today, Thursday 25 May, following my request to Westmeath County Council.

“The book will be opened from 1pm in the Civic Centre, Athlone and County Buildings, Mullingar.”

Yesterday Cllr O’Brien had said: “It is totally heartbreaking to see what has happened in Manchester,” he said.

“While acts of terrorism are more and more prevalent around the world, this attack, being so close to home, and affecting so many young people has really struck the hearts of many people right across Ireland.

“Many thousands of young people went along to the Manchester arena on Monday night to see what was to be their first ever concert, something that should have been a special moment in time, destroyed by the mindless actions of terror.

“We can only imagine what the parents and their families of the deceased are going through at this moment.

“I think it is only right that the people of Westmeath and the midlands be given an opportunity to express their sympathies and solidarity so in that regard I’ve requested Westmeath County Council to open a book of condolence.”
