Teen detained following Mullingar disturbances

A 15-year-old youth was detained following two separate disturbances close to a shop in Mullingar last Friday. 

According to gardaí, a large number of youths gathered close to the store on Pearse Street shortly before 4pm on Friday and gardaí were informed that some of them had been verbally abusive to passers-by.

Gardaí attempted to disperse the gathering but one of the group, a 15-year-old male, who was very abusive, was arrested and taken to Mullingar Garda Station.

At 4.20pm, a second call was received by gardaí, that youths had again gathered in the area of the shop and two units attended. 

Again gardaí were verbally abused by some of those present and while there were no arrests, the names of some offenders were taken and further garda action may follow.

 

Van damaged in arson attack

A Renault Trafic van was damaged in an attack on a property in the Ardilaun area of Mullingar at 2am on Sunday last, November 12. 

According to gardaí, an attempt was made to set the vehicle alight and Mullingar Fire Brigade attended at the scene. 

The vehicle was damaged in the attack and the scene was technically examined.

Investigating officers have issued an appeal for anyone who might have seen suspicious activity in the area on Sunday morning to contact them at 044 93 84000.

 

Ride-on lawnmower stolen 

Thieves who stole a ride-on lawnmower from a house in Bracklyn, Delvin last week smashed part of a garden fence in their haste to leave. 

The theft was discovered on Friday morning when the householder discovered the damaged fence before realising that the John Deere mower, valued at €3,000, was missing.

 

Cash and CCTV system taken

A thief who broke into a private dwelling in the Rathconrath area at the weekend stole a small amount of cash, along with a CCTV system which the home owner had installed. 

The burglary was discovered in the early hours of Saturday last.

 

Threw keg at nightclub door

A man in his late 40s is being sought by gardaí in Mullingar following an incident of criminal damage.

It is understood that the culprit threw a beer keg at the front door of a nightclub at Oliver Plunkett Street, Mullingar at about 2am on Saturday last, November 11.

 

Convent windows damaged

A number of windows at the Convent of Mercy in Rochfortbridge were damaged in the early hours of Sunday morning last. 

The gardaí received a report that windows in the building, which is currently undergoing a major renovations, were smashed by vandals.
