Commuters travelling from Dublin back to Westmeath this evening are facing traffic delays, with serious flooding causing tailbacks and diversions along the M4/N4.
Torrential rain across the country over the last 18 hours has resulted in flash flooding, with the westbound lanes of the Maynooth (J7) and Kilcock (J8) of the M4 under water.
A number of social media posts likened the motorway to "a river".
Transport Infrastructure Ireland, on its dedicated Twitter account for traffic updates, advised westbound motorists of long delays afoot.
