TY group organise Christmas event for St Vincent de Paul

A unique Christmas event is taking place in Tyrrellspass on Friday and Saturday December 22 and 23, and it’s called Christmas Magic at the Village Barn.

Organised by a group of 90 Transition Year students from St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rochfortbridge, they will be giving up their time both days between 10am and 6pm for an experience that the whole family can enjoy. And it’s all for a good cause, with all proceeds from the two days going directly to the local Saint Vincent de Paul branch.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner this week ahead of the event, Aoibhin Kenny, a representative of the TY group, explained how the idea came about.

“We’re learning how to be good social entrepreneurs so we joined forces with David Smyth Catering, and The Barn in Tyrrellspass, and that’s where we’re basing this event,” said Aoibhin.

“The whole TY group are in charge of running the event and we’re hoping that as many people as possible will come along and join in the experience,” says Aoibhin.

“It’s a rustic Santa experience and you get the chance to stir a traditional plum pudding, enjoy Christmas carols, sit beside the fireside and listen to storytelling, while outside there’s a games area and you can make your own personalised Christmas decoration for the tree at home.”

The experience costs €10 per child, and €5 per adult, and the TY group are hoping to raise as much money as possible for the local St Vincent de Paul branch.

“SVP is a really good cause and we’ve all been enjoying setting up this event.

“We’ve been planning it for the last month or so, and we’re all really excited. It’s been fun working with each other, we’ve been making our own costumes as we’ll be dressing up as elves for the day. We’re also organising Christmas presents for the kids.”
