Local friends named as finalists in Fisherman's Friend Search for Ireland's Greatest Friendship

Two sets of friends from Westmeath are celebrating after being named finalists in the Fisherman’s Friend Search for Ireland’s Greatest Friendship. 

Michael Fitzgerald Mick Moore from Rathwire are celebrating almost 40 years of friendship, and husband and wife duo Larry and Helen Kiernan from Mullingar are also thrilled after being named finalists in the search.

In a nationwide search by Fisherman’s Friend for Ireland’s Greatest Friendship, individuals from across Ireland were encouraged to pay tribute to a true friend who goes far beyond the call of duty by submitting an image and short description that best illustrates their friendship. 

The friendships captured the hearts of the judges, who included editor of Irish Country Living, Mairead Lavery; president of the Irish Photographic Federation, Dominic Reddin; and Martin Stimson, area business manager, Fisherman’s Friend. 

Michael and Mick have been friends and neighbours for 39 years. 

They spend much time together on DIY, gardening and, most recently completing, the build of a garden shed. 

Their two families have grown close due to the friendship and often celebrate family occasions together. 

Michael said: “Nowadays I spend a lot of time with my friend and there is never a dull moment. 

“In the past whenever I needed a helping hand or chat, Mick has been there – it is great to have a helping neighbour and friend nearby.”

Larry and Helen first met in 1973.

Helen said: “Larry is confident, a trait which attracted me to him when we first met. He is a great friend to have in times of trouble and in times of joy – strong, steadfast, so full of love, my soulmate. 

“Larry is just Larry. He is kind, considerate, supportive, loving and most importantly – up for the craic. Without Larry, my best friend, I would be nothing.”

Fisherman’s Friend’s search for Ireland’s Greatest Friendship launched in 2017 in association with the Irish Farmer’s Journal.
