Finian wins silver at European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships
Finian Farrell from Mullingar was among the medal winners on the third day of events at the 10th European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships in Sardinia, yesterday.
Finian, who is a kidney transplant recipient, was competing in the petanque doubles event with Charlie Ryan from Cobh, a retired skipper and liver transplant recipient – they won silver.
Finian said: “It was my first time to compete in petanque and it was an honour to partner with Charlie.
“Charlie was brilliant at encouraging me and the rest of the team really supported me and motivated me during the game.
“I want to thank my donor and my wife and kids for the support and encouragement to attend the training session.
“Team Ireland are so supportive, they constantly encouraged and advised me today at the event.”

The team continue to compete in other sporting disciplines including bowling doubles, track and field and Archery on Friday and Saturday.
A homecoming reception for Transplant Team Ireland takes place at the Dublin Airport arrivals hall (Terminal 1), when the team arrive home on a Eurowings flight from Dusseldorf on Sunday, June 24, around 3.15pm.
The Irish Kidney Association is looking forward to bringing the biennial European Games back to Ireland in 2020 after it successfully hosted the sixth European Transplant and Dialysis Games in Dublin in 2010.
The Irish Kidney Association is the charity organisation which manages Transplant Team Ireland’s participation at British, European and World Transplant Games events.
