Good scoring in the turkey competitions

Comments (0) | Print | Email

The men's turkey competition over the week-end was confined to Sunday due to the wintry conditions on Saturday. The underfoot conditions on Sunday and overall conditions were surprisingly good.

The turkey competition proved a very good attraction with a fine entry over the designated fifteen holes. Top scores returned were thirty five points from John (Radar) Lynch and Eugene Dunne and Martin Mc Cormack. Thirty three points was enough to win Dave Farrelly his Christmas dinner and the fifth bird went to Louis Vambeck, whose thirty two points was the better of three or four on that score on the tie break rule. More of the same next week end, remember the bigger the entry the more 'birds' will be given out. There is also a turkey competition during the week with, I believe, re-entry. See notice board for details. Turkey winners: John Lynch (8) 35 pts., Eugene Dunne (17) 35 pts., Martin McCormack (21) 35 pts., Dave Farrelly (16) 33 pts., Louis Vambeck (16) 32 points.

Morgan Golf and Sports Winter League

This year's winter league kicks off next week and runs for quite a while through the winter. The format seems very attractive as the entry forms on the notice are fast filling. There is very good scope for entering even if you don't get in on the scoring on the first couple of weeks. See the boards for details.

Great win for the Fordes in Father Pat Mixed

The final of the Father Pat Dunne mixed foursomes 2009 took place on Friday last in what could only be described as 'heavy going', the protagonists being the holders, Frank McKeon and Carmel Monaghan and Patrick and Margaret Forde. Despite the underfoot conditions the standard of golf played was out of the top drawer, with Pat and Margaret putting strings of very good holes together to edge out Frank and Carmel who put up a stout defence of their hard won title in 2008. Well done to both for such a sporting and entertaining match. The beaten semi-finalists were Gerry Purcell/Ann Hamill and Des Maguire and Ann Fagan. The prize presentation with all the outstanding prizes will take place on Saturday, November 7 at 5.30 or so.

Men's seniors' golf

Last Tuesday saw a fine turnout of the hardy annuals in conditions that were far from ideal. The prize winners over the twelve holes were as follows: first - Tom Mulvee (29 points), second - Tony English (27 points). Third spot went to Conor Maguire with a very respectable twenty six points, while the super seniors' prize was won by John Cunningham. Upcoming are the Christmas competitions - turkeys and hampers etc, details of which are on the relevant notice board.

Ladies Branch

Wednesday's 12 holes stableford competition was most generously sponsored by Elisabeth Sharkey. By all accounts conditions were pretty tough given the level of rainfall during the week. However, Jeannette McDonnell managed to keep things together nicely scoring the better of two 25 point tallies returned to take the spoils. Pauline O'Hara was the bearer of the other 25 points and was no doubt happy enough with her runners-up position. The unflappable, Dorothy O'Keeffe did not let the difficult conditions get the better of her, scoring a fine 16 points over the twelve holes for best gross. Annemarie Conlon's season continues to shine brightly between the autumn showers taking third spot ahead of Lilly Gilleran and Anita Coghlan with 23 points.

Lady Captain's Dinner

Keep an eye out on the notice board for details relating to the Lady Captain Geraldine Bell's Dinner which is to take place on Friday, November 13. Gerry has presented a mouth watering menu for all to consider and the time has arrived to declare your choice and attendance.
