Successful soccer term at Wilson's Hospital School

The opening term has been a very busy one for the soccer players at Wilson's Hospital School. Now they are heading into the Christmas break with a lot to show for their efforts.

Currently, the Under 19 boy's squad are on top of their group in the FAI West Leinster League. They have already scored convincing wins over last year's winners, Ard Scoil Phadraig, Granard and also a strong team from Mullingar Community College. George Bell (Newtownforbes) is the captain of the senior squad this year. The team has shown a huge improvement in only the second season of effort under coach, Mr Liam Boggs.

Soccer continues to be a strong sport for the senior girls in Wilson's Hospital School. The Girls Under 18 squad continue to impress. At present, they are unbeaten in both West Leinster League and Cup. Recently, Wilsons' girls overcame a strong team from St Finian's, Mullingar to qualify for the semi-final of the Cup. The midfield duo of Jill Draper (Kilbeggan) and Charlotte Farrell (Newry) scored both goals leading to a final score 2-0 to Wilson's.

For the first time the school has entered an Under 14 Girls squad in the west Leinster Cup competition. A creditable showing in the Cup against Caritas Dublin prepared the team for their first ever League game. Captain Lauren Payne (Horseleap) took her squad, comprising of pupils from several countries, to Colaiste na hInse, Laytown, Co. Meath on Monday 14th Dec. An exciting tussle saw the Multy girls equalise with a super volley from Gillian Cunningham. Megan Gould was unlucky not to convert a penalty from handball, so the game ended 1-1. Good luck to the girls when they meet Eureka, Kells, in their next game.

The Under 14 Boys were outplayed by Mullingar Community College last week in Longford. However, Wilson's player Mohammed Shamboul (Mullingar) scored goal of the game with a cracking volley before Mullingar CC powered ahead to a 4 - 1 win.

First Year Futsal has arrived in Multyfarnham

David Connell is the FAI Development Officer for Westmeath. He came to Wilson's to introduce the indoor competition to the pupils and then was a great help in sending forward a First Year Boys and First Year Girls team from Wilson's Hospital School to represent Westmeath in the North Leinster Final in Trim last week. Robyn Butler (Streete) was in impressive goal scoring form for the Wilson's girls. Bryan Wilson (Belturbet) captained the boy's team to a victory over O'Fiach College, Dundalk and gave both teams something to build on in 2010.
