Road race/fun run previews by Maurice Looby

Part of the Westmeath Sports Partnerships Destination Sport week, this 5k fun run aims to attract all levels of runner, with particular emphasis on beginners.

Walkers are, of course, welcome and encouraged. Last year's event attracted 140 and was three and a half laps of the town. This year the course looks better, starting and finishing in the town park and taking in two larger laps of the town.

While walking or driving around Mullingar, you might never realise that the town has a couple of hills. These become much more apparent when trying to run up them as fast as possible.

From the start of the run up to Dominick Street is a slow gradual climb. Turning left before Green Bridge, the route goes gradually downhill to Lynn Industrial Estate, and passes the Greyhound Stadium up the (small) hill that is Lynn road, and back to the town park. One more time around, and you're done!

Registration is €5 and is from 7pm in The Annebrook Hotel. Post race refreshments are promised, and all finishers receive a memento (which will be revealed on the night!).

There will be restricted access for traffic, and the course will be well marshalled. Weather forecast is unsettled and 12-15 degrees.
