Two local athletes are getting set to compete on the world stage having been selected to represent Ireland at the Special Olympics World Summer Games Los Angeles 2015.

Peter Malynn, aged 57, a bocce athlete from Mullingar, and Ruth Geerah (35) a bowling athlete, also from Mullingar, are among 88 Team Ireland athletes who will travel to Los Angeles to compete at the World Games this summer. They will be joined by a fellow Westmeath person, 20-year-old gymnast Shauna Stewart from Athlone.

Peter, who is a member of the bocce club at St Hilda’s Centre in Athlone, says that he felt “proud” when he heard the news that he had made the Irish team.

Ruth says that she is looking forward to representing her country in America this summer.

“I was over the moon, excited and could not believe the good news. It has not really sunk in yet,” she said.
