Tough Qualifier draw for loser of Westmeath/Offaly clash

Westmeath fans will be hoping John Heslin has his shooting boots on this Saturday evening.

Although both the Westmeath and Offaly camps will have their minds firmly on Saturday's eagerly anticipated Leinster SFC clash in Tullamore, the losers have been handed a tricky home tie in Round 1B of the Qualifiers.

Whichever county comes out on the wrong side of this weekend's midlands derby will face the loser of Sunday's Ulster SFC clash between Monaghan and neighours Cavan. The Qualifier clash, which will take place in either O'Connor Park or TEG Cusack Park (let's hope it's O'Connor Park ) on June 25 with a 6.30pm throw in.

Meanwhile, the county's hurlers received a bye and will go straight through to the first round. Prior to the draw, there was a possibility they might have to face the winners of the Christy Ring Final, Antrim or Carlow, who play next week-end but that fate now befalls Laois.

It means that having fallen short against Offaly, Michael Ryan has additional time to prepare his charges, taking the positives from the Offaly performance, alongside the heroics of the U21s in their historic defeat of Laois.
