Rochfortbridge Round-Up
The students of St Joseph"s Secondary School, Rochfortbridge are all set to perform yet another smash hit musical called Back to the Eighties. Following in the success of previous shows which include Oklahoma and Joseph, the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.Under the guidance of their music teacher, Yvonne Muldoon, Niamh Sheridan and Margaret Cole, the students are inviting you to join the graduating class of William Ocean High School as they live through their final senior year - as they experience the fun, the heartbreak, the loves and the loneliness of growing up - all set to the biggest hits of the 80"s!!St. Joseph"s are very fortunate to have enlisted local Choreographer Annemarie Bentick to work with the students as they perform, what promises to be, electric dance numbers!Set in the USA, Back To The 80"s tells the story of the senior class of William Ocean High School that graduated in the 1980"s, as remembered and seen through the eyes of Corey Palmer Senior (Eoin Rigney), who is now 30-something. The then 17-year-old Corey (Conor Walsh) is madly in love with his next-door neighbour, Tiffany Houston (Francis Fallon). Tiffany is one of the coolest girls in the school. However, she barely notices Corey as she is too busy mooning over Michael Feldman (Cayman Power), the hottest guy around. Michael and his friends are athletic and good-looking - the kind of guys that Corey and his two best friends dream of being. However, while they may not be the coolest guys in school, they are still one up on Fergal McFerrin III (Gavin Kirwan), whose best friend is his computer, and who believes the crazy notion that one day CD"s will replace cassette tapes. Will nice guy Corey get his girl? Will Fergal convince the class that he is not a nerd after all? Will their lovestruck teachers ever get it together?Throw in a Star Wars dream sequence, high-energy dance routines, the obligatory 80"s party scene, copious amounts of blue eye-shadow, twenty cans of hairspray, as well as some of the most popular songs ever written, and the result is a musical that is guaranteed to delight and amuse an audience of any age. The show will run from Tuesday October 21 to Saturday, October 25 in the School Gymnasium.Tickets are €15 and are available from Evelyn in the school office. The book investigates the scientific argument for climate change and the response to it by priests and politicians. She argues that not enough is being done at present to meet the challenge of global warming in order to make life on the planet sustainable for today"s generation of school children when they reach adulthood.'All the indications at present are that we will be living on a radically different planet by the middle of the century if nothing is done to reduce our carbon emissions,' says Anna.Drawing on her experience as a Green-School Coordinator, she shows how the Green-School programme is a very effective means of meeting the challenge of climate change in Irish schools.Despite a hectic schedule including that of popular panellist on Derek Mooney"s afternoon show broadcast daily on RTE Radio 1, Éanna is looking forward to coming to Rochfortbridge to launch the book and raise the Green Flag.
