The late Lucy Moore and Gus Mulligan

The death occurred on August 23 of Mrs. Lucy Moore, of Williamstown Finea - and sadly, just 10 days later, on September 2, of her brother, Augustine Mulligan, also of Williamstown.Mrs. Moore (nee Mulligan), who was 84 at the time of her death, was a native of Finea, growing up less than a mile from the farm on which her future husband, Luke Moore, grew up.An intelligent and outgoing woman, who came from an educated family that sent a number of priests and schoolteachers into the world, Mrs. Moore studied at a college in Eccles Street in Dublin before going into the hotel business. She enjoyed a very successful career, working in some of Dublin’s best-known hotels of the time, and also brought her experience and expertise to bear in an establishment in Co. Donegal. It was, however, love that brought her back to Westmeath, for after she and husband Luke, married, in Dublin, she came back to Finea. Luke, a highly respected and hard-working individual, was engaged in farming and in did contracting work for farmers, having a talent with machinery at a time when mechanisation had not yet fully taken hold in Irish agriculture. The couple were 55 years married at the time of Mrs. Moore’s death, a loss that has brought great sadness to her husband and family.Surving Mrs. Moore are her sons, Gerry, Joseph (“Jodie”) and Martin, and her daughters, Mrs. Theresa Kevin, and Mrs. Lily Wilson; her grandchildren, her sister, Nan, her sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, her sisters-in-law, her nephews, nieces, neighbours, and friends. The removal of remains took place from Mrs. Moore’s home to St. Mary’s Church Finea, and Fr. Oliver Skelly, PP Coole, celebrated the funeral Mass, following which the remains were interred in the adjoining cemetery. The late Gus MulliganThe death occurred peacefully at Mullingar General Hospital on Thursday, September 2nd last of Mr. Augustine Mulligan, Williamstown, Finea. Gus, as he was affectionately known, was of a very kind and gentle nature and a most obliging neighbour. He was a native of the area, who farmed all his life and loved the land, his cattle and country lifestyle. His remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church, Finea, on Friday evening at 6.30p.m. Burial took place in the local cemetery following Requiem Mass at 11a.m. the next morning. Both removal and funeral were large in attendance. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; sons, Matthew, Andrew and Padraig, sister, Nan; daughters-in-law, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours, relatives and friends, to whom deepest sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.
