The Mullingar Educate Together NS team with their medals.

North Leinster soccer title for Mullingar ETNS

Mullingar Educate Together National School are the FAI North Leinster Primary Schools 5s champions.

The finals, which took place in Navan MDL Showgrounds on Thursday May 2, placed Westmeath winners METNS in a group featuring the Louth, Longford and Meath champions.

The day began with a hard fought win against Duleek NS, the Meath champions. The match ended 3-2 after a frantic, end-to-end game with both sides showing commitment and talent in abundance.

Mullingar were then desperately unlucky to lose 3-2 to a strong side from Monastery NS, Ardee. Having fallen behind, METNS dragged themselves level, and were unlucky not to convert numerous chances. They fell victim to a last minute winner against the run of play.

The team was positive, however, buoyed by their resilience and never say die attitude going into their last group game.

In the final game, all teams had three points and every team was in with a chance of progressing. Mullingar did all they could, and went on to win 7-1 against St Dominic’s NS, the Longford champions.

After a very tense climax to the other final game in the group, Duleek NS and Monastery NS Ardee drew 2-2, which meant that Mullingar were crowed North Leinster champions.

Please come along and support the team in the Leinster Final in Navan on Thursday May 16, where they will face the champions of Dublin, Mid-Leinster and South Leinster in what promises to be a fantastic day of football. The eventual winners will be heading to the Aviva Stadium at the end of the month to vie for the All-Ireland trophy.

The players were Ameen Hacini, Mohamed Mugtaba, Shane Hopkins, Cathal Nevin, Alan Turczyk, Jack Byrne, Emmett Brennan and Torin Jackson. Sien Sibi, who played on the county winning team due to Alan Turczyk’s absence, was a fantastic help to the team on the day.

The coaches were Anthony Allen, Peter White, Róisín Brennan and Michael Fleming.
