Kilbeggan students impress as Young Scientists

Congratulations to Mercy Secondary School Kilbeggan students who represented their school admirably at the 2020 BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE).

Fifth year students Erin Heaney and Lisa Ennis entered the Behavioural Science Senior section with their project ‘NCCA Vs Students – Where is the Change?’.

They met the Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin TD after outlining their project, and told him about their research as well.

Transition year student Orna Kelly entered a project titled ‘Goodbye Documentation, Hello Dramatisation’ in the Behavioural Science Intermediate category.

TY students Tiarnan Clarke Mac Mahon, Luke Seery and Owen Bagnall qualified for the intermediate Chemistry and Maths category. Their entry ‘Fighting for Breath - Is the School Drop-off Harmful to Students health?’ attracted a lot of media attention and the boys featured on RTÉ and Virgin Media 1 news.

Tiarnan, Luke and Owen impressed the judges and received two awards; Highly commended in the Immediate Chemistry and Maths category, and the Poster Display Award.

The boys were interviewed by Sarah Collins, CEO of the Asthma Society Ireland – footage of the interview was streamed live from the exhibition and to date has been viewed almost 10,000 times.
