Four quarter-final places decided in Westmeath SFC

Four of the eight quarter-final places have now been decided in the Westmeath Senior Football Championship.

Thanks to their 2-10 to 0-9 victory over The Downs last night (Sunday), Rosemount have joined Garrycastle, St Loman's Mullingar and Coralstown/Kinnegad in the last eight.

Rosemount's goals were scored by Theo Watts and Sean Pettit as Frankie Dolan's charges avenged last year's quarter-final defeat to the same opponents.

Those aforementioned sides will be joined by one of the teams from the following four pairings: Athlone/Caulry, Castledaly/The Downs, Tyrrellspass/Shandonagh and Killucan/Mullingar Shamrocks.

Flanagan Cup (pictured above) holders Garrycastle advanced to the quarter-finals with an emphatic win (5-11 to 0-5) over Caulry at Páirc Chiaráin on Saturday evening.

For their part, last year's defeated finalists St Loman's Mullingar saw off Shandonagh by 0-17 to 1-8 to secure their place in the last eight.

A draw against Killucan last Friday night was enough for Coralstown/Kinnegad to clinch a quarter-final place. It means that 2018 champions Mullingar Shamrocks must beat Killucan in their second group game or they will be eliminated from the championship.

Killucan could still top Group 4 if they defeat Shamrocks by a sufficient margin to jump ahead of Coralstown/Kinnegad on scoring difference. Shamrocks cannot top the group as they are unable to reach Coralstown/Kinnegad's points tally of three.

Any team which doesn't make it to the quarter-finals will take part in the relegation play-offs, which will consist of two 'semi-finals' and an overall relegation 'final'.

Meanwhile, three of the quarter-finalists in the Westmeath Intermediate FC have been determined, with Moate All Whites, Tang and St Mary's Rochfortbridge safely through.

Moate had a big win over Bunbrosna on Friday evening in in Castletown-Geoghegan, having narrowly defeated Ballymore in the opening round. If Ballymore can beat Bun' in their last group game, they will also progress to the quarter-finals.

Tang's narrow victory over local rivals Maryland (1-13 to 2-8) sealed their passage to the last eight. The Drumraney men can still progress if they beat Kilbeggan Shamrocks in their second group encounter.

St Mary's Rochfortbridge, who operated in the senior ranks last year, are also through after their 1-13 to 1-12 win over Ballynacargy. The winner of the Milltown v Ballynacargy game will join the 'Bridge in the quarter-finals.

In Group 1, St Malachy's victory over Milltownpass (1-12 to 2-8) means no team is through from this group yet. Multyfarnham will need to beat Malachy's in the last group game to have any chance of progressing but even if they win this match, they could lose out on scoring difference. Multyfarnham lost to Milltownpass in a high scoring opening round clash.

St Mary's will meet whoever finishes second in Group 1, and the team which tops Group 1 will face Milltown or Ballynacargy in their quarter-final.

As with the SFC, any team which doesn't make it to the quarter-finals will be involved in the relegation play-offs.
