Mullingar hospital statement on 'sudden surge in Covid-19 cases'

Management at Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar have released a statement to Westmeath Examiner explaining why a third ICU has had to be opened at the facility in recent days.

"The sudden and sharp surge of Covid-19 cases in the community has meant pressure has increased on every aspect of the hospital.

"As a result, the Hospital has opened a third ICU ward for patients who are particularly ill due to Covid-19.

"Regional Hospital Mullingar asks everyone to follow the public health advice. Stay at home, keep your distance, wear a mask and wash your hands," came the statement.

"Regional Hospital Mullingar would also like to remind the general public that anyone who is experiencing Covid-19 like symptoms to please contact their GP in the first instance. Please avoid coming directly to ED if you feel you might need to be treated for Covid-19 or you wish to have a test," continued the statement.

"Getting an early diagnosis from your GP means you can get the help you need and take steps to avoid spreading the virus.

"The management of Regional Hospital Mullingar would like to thank the public for their continued support."
