The total number of local Covid related deaths has been revealed

The number of Covid related deaths in Westmeath since the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020 has been revealed.

According to a newly published report by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre between March 1, 2020 and September 14 this year, 77 people from Westmeath lost their lives as a result of the virus.

The mortality rate in Westmeath is 86.74 per 100,00, significantly lower than the national average of 108.76 per 100,000.

Monaghan (102 deaths/ 166.16 per 100,000), Mayo (210/160.91 per 100,000) and Louth (202/156.73 per 100,000) have the highest mortality rates, while Kerry (60 deaths/ 40.62 per 100,000), Sligo (30/ 45.78 per 100,000) and Leitrim (16/49.93 per 100,000) have the lowest.

There have been 113 Covid related deaths in Cavan, 161 in Meath, 76 in Offaly and 53 in Roscommon.

As of midnight yesterday, there had been 140 new Covid cases recorded in Westmeath over the last week. However, the seven day incidence of 157.7 per 100,000 is half of the 14 day incidence rate (333.4 per 100,000).
