Wines Direct apply for planning for a second Westmeath store

Mullingar's Wines Direct has applied for planning permission for a second shop in Westmeath.

The well known retailer, which is based in Lough Sheever Corporate Park, has lodged a planning application with Westmeath County Council for a new store on the Magazine Road in Athlone.

The planning application includes details for the change of use of Units 1 and 3 at the Hickey Building from retail to retail use with wine, as well as plans to merge the two units into one.

The planning report by planning consultant David Mulcahy, which was submitted with the application, states that Wines Direct "is an established wine retailer with a retail wine unit successfully operating out of a business park in Mullingar”.

“It is looking to repeat this model in Magazine Road which offers the same benefits in terms of having sufficient space for the retail display area. The development will add to the diversity of retail offer at this edge of town centre location [and] will be a significant benefit to the town, preventing leakage of retail to other counties.”

The decision due date for the application is January 5 next.
