Shooting Stars at St Mary’s, Delvin inspire through art

The pupils of the Shooting Stars class at St Mary’s Special School in Delvin have been awarded second place in a national art competition run by the Catholic Primary School Management Association (CPSMA) – an achievement they and the staff of St Mary’s are proud of as there were more than 2000 entries.

The theme was ‘Saints,’ and Shooting stars class chose St Joseph of Cupertino as he is the patron saint of intellectual disabilities and as the pupils in Shooting Stars have designated abilities termed moderate or severe learning difficulties with additional physical disabilities and medical needs.

The picture they submitted was a joint project for which each of the pupils created a separate element, from using their thumb prints to create the head, hands and feet, using a sponge to create the sky, sticking buttons on to represent the sun, and colouring in images boys and girls.

Once each section was complete, pupils with support from Joanne Whelan, Shooting Stars class teacher, and the SNAs, brought together their work and created the award winning piece.

On Monday April 24, they were invited by the CPSMA to The Strand Hotel in Limerick for a presentation. The pupils are extremely proud of their achievement and are looking forward to their party with Matt Leavy.
