Pat Whelan resigns from Fine Gael

Former Mullingar Town Council member Pat Whelan has dramatically, this evening, Sunday, announced his resignation from Fine Gael.Mr. Whelan strengthened his announcement by posting it on his Facebook page, stating that he had resigned from the party, but giving no reason.The move will come as a surprise to many in political circles: until the Mullingar Fine Gael agm on Thursday evening last, he was secretary of the local Fine Gael branch.Last year, Mr. Whelan, an accountant, announced he was resigning from Mullingar Town Council, but he later changed his mind, and ran again in the local elections, but failed to regain his seat.Read more on this story in Wednesday's Westmeath Examiner
