At a time when it would be easy to become defeatist about the town or even the country's chances of emerging from recession, Mullingar Chamber's attempts to stimulate the local economy through its vouchers and eye-catching new currency, the Gar, are steps in the right direction. The attendance at last Monday night's Town Hall meeting might have been small, but there was a determination among those present to work together to emerge from the financial maelstrom that Westmeath and the rest of Ireland has been engulfed in for the past three years.By making a concerted effort to support local businesses this Christmas, we will not only be making our own contribution to the revival of Mullingar's economy in the short-term, but also to the future viability of the town as a place to live and work for generations to come.
