Aldi begins construction of new €4.5m Kinnegad store

Work has just commenced on Aldi’s latest Westmeath store – on the Dublin Road out of Kinnegad.

Aldi says the new store will take approximately six months to build and will cost €4.5m.

Fifteen staff will be employed when the award winning store format opens.

The development is as part of Aldi’s €160m Irish store network investment programme. Once completed, the store floor-space will stand at 1,254m². The store will be powered by 100% green electricity, while the development will be professionally and comprehensively landscaped. There will also be 90 free car parking spaces available for customers.

The construction of the store will be managed by Glebe Builders, with up to 80 jobs created during its building phase,

Commenting, Donald Mackay, Managing Director Aldi Naas Region said: “We are really excited to turn the sod on the construction of our new Kinnegad store. Every new Aldi store that opens brings greater choice, quality and value to shoppers.

“Our commitment to our customers is we will never be beaten on price and will always provide the best value.

“Our Swap and Save campaign continues into 2019 and the goal of this campaign is to remind shoppers about the saving that can be generated by swapping their weekly shop to Aldi.”

The new store will feature Aldi’s award-winning Project Fresh design. Aldi’s Project Fresh store layout was recognised at the Checkout National Retail Supplier Awards, by scooping the Best New Store Build award for Aldi’s Ennistymon store, one of Aldi’s first Project Fresh stores.

Aldi has become an established part of Westmeath’s retail landscape, operating stores in Athlone and Mullingar (Green Road and Dublin Road). These stores have donated over 40,000 meals of surplus food to local charities, which equates to over €55,000 in savings for partner charities in Westmeath.

The stores also take part in Aldi’s Community Grants network, with Friends of Regional Hospital Mullingar, the ISPCA, and RNLI Lough Ree Lifeboat Station availing of the €500 bursary grant in recent times.

Aldi has been Ireland’s fastest growing supermarket for most of the last ten years, achieving a 10.9% market share.

Employing almost 3,500 people, the company operates a network of 137 stores across the country, with stores in each county in the Republic of Ireland.
