Time to plan for this year's Westmeath's Fittest Company

It’s time to plan your attack and get your teams ready for this year’s Westmeath’s Fittest Company.

Has your company got a team of four capable of knocking Westmeath County Council off their winning perch? They are reigning champions for 2018 and 2017 and it’ll take a strong, fit team to beat them. Are you up for the challenge?

Last year the weather was smiling for Westmeath’s Fittest Company 2018. On a beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies, Lilliput Adventure Centre, with the backdrop of Lough Ennell, looked spectacular.

And the winners were... The Cancer Support Sanctuary, LARCC! Yes thanks to your exceptional efforts over the last five years, this great local charity, based in Multyfarnham, has benefitted to the tune of some €60,000, while the total raised for all charities associated with this event is at an impressive €78,540.

The team to raise the most last year were yet again Mr Crumb who reached a total of €3,687.50.

Thirty one teams of four from companies all over the county toed the line last year to compete for the title.

The ladies event was a straight final, pitting DPD Athlone, Mr Crumb, Bennett Construction, Mergon International, Trend Technologies and Westmeath County Council against one other. The heartbreak of losing the 2017 final on photo finish made the mighty ladies of Trend doubly determined to win the title, and they did so in a marvellous show of teamwork, all four of them approaching and crossing the finish line arm in arm in a wonderful display of team spirit.

The sun continued to shine for the open final with eight teams eyeing each other up at the start line on the shore of the lake. Joint first out of the water at the end of the one kilometre kayaking section were the marvellously calm and collected Castlepollard Community College and O’Briens Centra.

The competition ebbed and flowed as O’Briens Centra established an early lead, but, somewhat ominously, hot on their heals were all four team members of Westmeath County Council. Dark horses for the title, ORS, ran into difficulty in the water and lost at least a minute, and you just can’t give quality teams like the council or O’Briens that sort of lead.

Mergon were never too far off the leaders and always had the strength (and experience) to threaten. The council never panicked, however, and worked well together, methodically closing out O’Briens, who had separated, and ran out fairly comfortable winners in the end.
