Pitch and Putt club hosts Match Play Championships

The Rochfortbridge Pitch and Putt club hosted the Westmeath Match Play Championships recently, with the weather being kind to the players, with just a light drizzle of rain here and there. The course was in perfect condition, and some great pitch and putt was played, according to PRO for the club, Michael Coyne.A number of club members took part with great results. Winner of the Junior section, was Keith Lenihan, making him the county champion in both stroke and match play. A big congrats is extended to Keith from all club members. In the ladies section, Joan Henry was runner up, so a great performance from both players.The Juvenile numbers are increasing on a daily basis, which is great to see. The club had a number of Juveniles taking place in the Ferbane Open, coming away with three prizes, which is another boost to the club. Coaching for Juveniles continues on Monday to Thursday at 5 o"clock, and Saturday morning at 11am.Birthday wishes are extended to Gary Doyle, who celebrated his 16th birthday recently. He will now move into the Junior category.Winners in the raffle held in the clubhouse on Wednesday, July 9 are Kevin Malone (Rochfortbridge) who won €300, Harry Corroon (Carbury), who won €200. Joe Keane and from the Naul, Co Dublin, who won four rounds of golf, Joe Kennedy, from the Downs, who won a meal for two, while Joe Donoghue, Rochfortbridge won free membership for one year.Rochfortbridge Cúl CampThe VHI Cúl camp took place in Rochfortbridge all last week, with boys and girls aged between 7 and 13 participating and improving on their GAA games skills.In a fun, non-competitive environment, irrespective of sporting skills or ability, the children participating got to meet new people, develop a keen sense of fair-play, be active and have fun! Children also received a full set of playing gear (jersey, shorts and socks) and a nifty knapsack.The Cúl camp week included four skill development days and one fun blitz day, The kids learned to catch and kick the ball, movement and passing skills, tackling and evasion skills, and attacking and defending skills. They camp also focused on the principles, values, and behaviours that are central to participation in Gaelic Games. The children learned all about sportsmanship and respect for their teammates, opponents, match officials, coaches, parents and the game. They also learned about playing for fun, and how to live a healthy lifestyle,The fun blitz day included fun games, skill challenges and a blitz, all while incorporating a secondary theme on the knowledge of the playing rules.Tidy TownsJudging for the national Tidy Towns competition is taking place in unspecified dates during June, July and August, so with a view to this, members of the Tidy Towns committee in Rochfortbridge are advising everyone to keep an eye out for litter.The annual competition organised by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government involves participating areas being rated on all aspects of their local environment and prizes awarded to the best under many different categories. Marks are given for overall development approach, the built environment, landscaping, wildlife and natural amenities, litter control, tidiness, waste minimisation, residential areas, roads, streets and back areas, general impression.Evelyn Kelly, Tidy Towns Committee member said, that while there are council works going on in the town, Rochfortbridge is looking well.'We are keeping the litter off the streets, and the planting of flower beds in town has been very successful, they really look lovely,' says Evelyn Kelly of the local Tidy Towns committee.The overall winner of the Tidy Towns competition will be announced in September.
