"Dogs: not a runner"s best friend"

Dear Editor,I enjoy jogging on the Canal around Mullingar and have occasion to meet many adults out walking with their dogs, some on short leads, some on long leads and yes: some on no leads at all!Now while I have nothing against dogs, except the ones who have bitten me in the past, some have a tendency to run and bark at me when I pass which is off-putting to say the least.I am always cautions when I meet them because, unlike their owner, I don"t know if they are 'friendly' and obedient. Some owners will keep a hold over their dogs when they see me approaching but there are a few who do not and are quite happy to let their dog loose to do what they want i.e. attack me!Recently I was instructed by an owner to 'STOP' my run so that they could reel in their dog who was on a long lead, as otherwise it was not going to be safe for me to pass.I would therefore appeal to all dog owners to please keep control of their dogs while out walking with them on the public thoroughfares around the town, thus showing consideration to others who use them.Yours faithfully,"A.Runner."(Name and address with editor).
