Conditions were perfect for football and a sizable crowd were expectant. Twice these teams had met this year and both times The Downs were victorious, the most recent meeting being a comprehensive win for the Black and Ambers over a severely depleted St Marys outfit. Now at last St Marys fielded a close to full strength side and the outcome of this game would be a truer measure of St Marys worth. Following the first round trouncing by The Downs, these lads regrouped and refocused and after some tenacious and impressive performances they now found themselves back in the hunt. And so the stage was set for a mouth-watering encounter. From the throw-in St Marys took the game to The Downs and in a whirlwind start had four points on the board in quick succession. It looked ominous for The Downs , but on their first meaningful attack they raised the green flag to knock St Marys back on their heels. This gave The Downs a major boost and they built on this to establish a strong foothold in the game. Points followed and a second goal and soon the visitors were four points to the good. At this stage St Marys rallied and two points before half-time left only two points between the teams going into the break.Half-time Score: St Marys 0-08, The Downs 2-04.The second half resumed where it had left off with both teams battling for supremacy. An enthralling struggle was unfolding. Every ball was contested fiercely and fairly. St Marys got back on level terms with a couple of well taken points. The Downs replied with a point of their own. St Marys won a penalty. The normally lethal Jake Byrne took it and shot straight at the keeper. Lesser players might have thought that the game was lost at that point. Two more points gave St Marys the slenderest of leads. A break downfield ended up with another goal to The Downs. Could the Bridgemen salvage the game? Then, dramatically, St Marys were awarded another penalty. The tension was unbearable as Gordon O"Sullivan faced the keeper. To miss it would surely doom the team to defeat. However, an apparently nerve-free Gordon struck a sweet shot to the keeper"s left side to restore St Marys" one point lead. A period of intense pressure ensued in which the St Marys defence was outstanding and they refused to allow The Downs score for the remainder of the game. A couple of timely points gave St Marys a three point cushion at the finish. Great joy and huge relief greeted the final whistle. This was a great team performance by St Marys and they can now look forward to playing either Rosemount or Killucan in the final. The Downs played a huge role in this game and with a bit of luck the result would have been reversed. The game was played in a great spirit and provided a fascinating hours entertainment for everybody present.Final Score: St Marys 1-14, The Downs 3-05.Team and Scorers: D. Whitsun, C. Irvine, L.
