Mediocre scores at Open Fourball as wind takes its toll
Wet and windy was the forecast for Sunday last and plenty of the latter was what actually happened in Castle Barna as the early golfers got on the first tee for the open fourball. The rain held off for a change but the early finishing scores were mediocre and it was obvious the wind was taking its toll.39 points held an early lead for quite a while but a fourball is usually won in the mid forties. Golfing buddies, Martin Brady and Mervin Daly arrived with 42 points to take the lead in the clubhouse and for a while it was looking good for the pair. The senior and junior combination of Noel Guing and youthful David Brazil was working well and they turned through nine with 23 points.Meantime Noel Egan and Con Sheridan returned another 42 points putting pressure on Martin and Mervin. However the Edenderry/Daingean pairing of Guing and Brazil had a 20 point back 9 to score a winning total of 43 points.Mixed FoursomesIn the final of the mixed foursomes Geraldine Heavey and Dan Shaughnessy beat the fancied title holders, Stevie Egan Snr and Patricia Maher 3 and 2.Inter ClubThe Offaly championship hosted by Birr GC took place on Saturday last and Castle Barna failed to take the title once again.Next WeekNext Sunday"s competition is a single stableford and Stewards are Liam Scally and Sean O"ConnorThursday OpenBeginning on Thursday November 6 is an 18 hole open single stableford taking place.
